A HISTORY OF SUSTAINABILITY
1980s
CLEAN TECH, INC. BEGAN
In 1988, Clean Tech, Inc. was founded to address the growing need for plastic recycling, focusing on two of the most commonly used packaging materials: high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET).
At a time when recycling was not yet mainstream, we took the initiative to develop innovative processes that would keep plastic bottles in the loop—preventing them from being discarded, and instead, reintroducing them into the cycle as valuable materials.
By 1989, Clean Tech had officially launched its manufacturing operations, introducing primary processing methods such as sorting and grinding HDPE and PET. Additionally, we installed an advanced HDPE recycling system designed to efficiently wash and pelletize the material.
1990s
EXPANDING OUR IMPACT
In 1991, Clean Tech expanded its capabilities with the addition of a second full HDPE recycling system. This momentum continued in 1993, with the installation of a complete PET recycling system, enhancing the range of materials processed.
By 1995, operations grew significantly with the installation of a flake color sorting system for PET and HDPE, the launch of second recycling facility in Michigan equipped for aluminum, glass, and plastic processing, and a 40,000 square foot expansion of the Dundee facility to support increasing demand.
In 1996, two additional flake color sorting systems were added, and in 1998, HDPE processing capacity was increased by 40 million pounds per year, marking another key milestone in our recycling advancements.
2000s
OPERATIONAL MILESTONES
In 2001, a dedicated water treatment plant was added, supporting more efficient and environmentally responsible operations. By 2003, processing began on a second PET line, boosting overall capacity.
In 2005, Clean Tech further expanded its capabilities with the addition of two PET extrusion lines. Continuing this growth, 2008 saw an increase of 26 million pounds in PET extrusion capacity along with the introduction of SSP processing, reinforcing our commitment to innovation and sustainability.
2010s
GROWING OUR CAPABILITIES
In 2011, Clean Tech began construction on a new state-of-the-art facility in Dundee, Michigan — a major milestone in the company’s ongoing commitment to growth and sustainability. This expansion reflected both the increasing demand for recycled PET and the company’s dedication to advancing closed-loop recycling technologies.
By 2012, the Dundee facility was fully operational, significantly enhancing production capacity and introducing new efficiencies in material recovery and processing. The investment not only strengthened Clean Tech’s position as a leader in sustainable packaging, but also underscored its role in supporting the broader circular economy.
2020s
OVER 35 YEARS OF SUSTAINABILITY
In 2021, Clean Tech doubled its food-grade PET capacity, marking a major step forward in advancing sustainable packaging and meeting the growing demand for recycled materials. This investment strengthened the company’s leadership in circular economy innovation and product quality.
In 2023, Clean Tech expanded its HDPE recycling capacity, broadening its material capabilities and reinforcing its commitment to efficient, responsible resource recovery for a more sustainable future.
